last week, we had a bit of a scare. baby girl had a febrile seizure. never thought it would happen to us. never say never.
looking back, i try not to beat myself up too much.
i kinda knew her neck was warm to touch 2 days prior.
i knew she had a fever the day before as they called from daycare to pick her up because of the fever. i gave her only a couple doses of tylenol ...she spit up half of it. gave her a cool bath and sent her to grandma's.
i saw her before i went for my hair appt..i knew her neck felt hot and she looked tired.
phone at the hair salon rings..it's for me. it's Kima.
me: "hi kima! i'm so glad it's you ...i thought this was joe cuz jasmine has been running a fever"
kima: (very calm) "that's why i'm calling you.. joe has been trying to reach you (i don't keep my cell phone on)...he had to bring jasmine to the hospital..they are going in an ambulance..she had a seizure"
me: "oh my god! is everything ok?!"
kima: "yes, everything is ok..everything is fine"
me: "ok ...call me if anything happens, ok"
i am in total shock that this is actually happening that for a split second...i actually think that i will continue my hair appt (i was in the 1st phase of the color process of my peekaboo highlights).
then i call Joe.
me: "hello?"
joe: "GET OVER HERE"
"i gotta go...i gotta go... i'll call you about my hair"
i know i am hyperventilating...i can feel tingling in both hands and my my upper body is shaking while my lower body feels like jello.
i think to myself that i have to stay calm... i will my body to do what it has to do so that i can get to baby girl.
i think... i hope i don't get pulled over..why am i getting all the red lights?..this drive is taking too long... what will i do if she is gone? ...what will i do if she is a vegetable...why didn't i take care of her better? why was i worried about other things than taking care of my daughter when she needed me so that this wouldn't have happened?
i guess thinking worst case scenario helps me to figure out what i need to do in case worst case scenario happens.
thank you god for giving me a good parking spot. thank you hospital for making it easy to find the ER.
what a relief to see her crying in my mahal's arms. i didn't even want to hear the details of what happened.
the doctor said febrile seizures tend to be genetic - i don't really buy that. little kids can't regulate their core body temp like adults...i think a high fever can fry their brain.
apparently, Joe was cuddling with her as it was about time to sleep. she was still feeling hot..she wasn't talking..he tried to get a response from her but nothing ...very lethargic and then her body stiffened up.
we stayed in ER for 3 hrs. they couldn't find any cause except to say this was a seizure brought on by high fever. she probably caught something viral.
they gave her a dose of motrin. they irrigated both ears = huge chunk of ear wax both ears. they catheterized her to get urine specimen. nothing.
my lesson for myself: stop and smell my baby girl's hair...stop and pay attention to what i hold dear.
